The beginning of the movie shows a girl leaving a party during the night on Amity Island and she elects to go swimming in the nude with her friend on the beach. Once she is out in the deep part swimming something starts to tug on her in the water. The dramatic sound that director has playing in the background introduces an uncertainty of what is about to happen. The director has a darkness surrounding the girl with the different angles from under the water to above the water to create suspense and drama. She is then thrashed around in the water and shoved from side to side and eventually dragged under the water. This is the part of the movie that sets the element for the following events that incur.
The following day the girl is reported missing and the search ends with her remains found on the beach by the Police Chief Martin Brody. The chief receives a call from the medical examiner and after a few minutes he hangs up the phone and scurries to his car to head down to the beach. He is carrying signs and he is instructing the deputy to start closing the beach. He continues with a dialogue of telling his fellow deputy “we have to close the beach” and he then speeds off in his car. The mayor is there as well and the deputy relays the plans to close the beach to him. Once the Police Chief Brody arrives at the beach and he is approached by the Mayor Larry Vaughn who voices concern about the how the shark attack will ruin the season and that he needs to blame it on a boating incident. It is apparent that there is some manipulation by the Mayor and there is more concern about the businesses being at risk than the safety of the community. The Chief elects to leave the beaches exposed for the July 4th weekend and he assigns individuals to watch the surrounding areas. Each time there is a scream the Chief’s is panicked for a second. The interchange back to the water then to the Chief starts to create a heighted sense of panic because you are waiting for something be revealed. Eventually after a few minutes the dreaded music begins and the attack yet again, and this time it is a young boy. The people are running out the water, it is total mayhem and chaos. Once everyone is out of the water you see a yellow float and a pool of blood surrounding it, this the float that young boy was floating around on. The mother of the child begins to call for the son, at this point it is obvious that this is her child that the shark had viciously killed. The public is scared and angry to learn that the shark had previously attacked and there weren’t precautions taken to close the beach. The chief is blamed and he is consumed with guilt.
