Because if it wasn’t for him we wouldn’t be able to play or watch the sport we all enjoy. It was 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts when James came up with the idea of basketball. Basketball was never meant to become as big as it is today. Naismith was just assigned to come up with a game that people in the YMCA could play during the winter, in between the seasons of football during the fall and lacrosse during the spring. Basketball is different from the invention of other sports because it was not evolved from a different sport and was made up by a single individual. One of the most important advances in the game was the introduction of dribbling. Dribbling was introduced in 1900, and before that you could only pass the ball. Now you could dribble the ball with one hand, and this introduced new moves such as the crossover, half revers, and the behind the back dribble. Because of the invention of dribbling, you could not be called for traveling, which is when you walk with the ball without dribbling it. Another change to the game was blocking. Blocking can mean two things, it can either be a defensive foul or it can be when a defensive player blocks an offensive player’s shot at the basket.
