He was the youngest of three sons, and was considered the “trouble maker” child of them. His family were Methodists, and fought against a tragedy at age five when his mother passed away. His father remarried and shortly after it broke up, he moved to Los Angeles leaving his sons to defend on their own. When James Garner reached the age of 16, he joined the United States Merchant Marine at the end of World War 2. A few years later, Garner went back to attend Norman High School, and dropped out his senior year.
