The declaration of independence is what set the stone rolling for the freeing of the slaves. The declaration was also the gateway to the five compromises. The first being the Bill of rights. The Bill of rights is the first part of twenty seven amendments. Next was the three fifths compromise is basically telling all the states where they stand. Following the three fifths compromise, was The Missouri Compromise of 1820. In which Missouri was announced a slave state, and Maine a free state. Not long after came The Compromise of 1850 which consisted of five major bills passed by the united states congress. Last but certainly not least, was The Kansas/Nebraska Act of 1854. Out of the twenty seven amendments we have today, the Bill of Rights is the first ten. You may be familiar with some of them, Freedom of speech, the right to bear arms, and bail and fines. The government expected The Bill of Rights would guarantee the rights and freedom of the people. Though no where in The Bill of Rights does it mention anything about slavery. Which is interesting knowing that the first amendment is the freedom of speech. And the slaves definitely did not have freedom of speech. Later in the three fifths compromise, a “solution” to this issue was created.
The three fifths compromise was a solution to the need for slave representation. For if America was to be true to the new laws they had placed, something needed to be done. In this compromise it was written that three out of five slaves would be able to be represented, but they still did not have the authority to vote.
