I don’t try to act as too much of a cliche but I can say that I have been overcoming an obstacle for at least three years now. I attend a predominantly caucasian and hispanic institution with only about 20 kids of my ethnicity. I am also a choice student meaning that I attend their school even though I live in a different town. The obstacle I overcome almost everyday and have been for the last three years is representing my culture. Jackie Robinson went into the MLB as the only of his kind and did outstanding things.…

Jackie Robinson was a famous American professional baseball player who became the first African American to play in Major League. This topic is important because by the Dodgers signing Jackie Robinson, ended racial segregation in professional baseball that had placed black players to the Negro leagues since the 1880s. Robinson's use of nonviolence, and unquestionable talent showed the basis of segregation which then marked many aspects of American life. He influenced the culture of The Civil Rights Movement significantly. I choose this topic to show how standing up to people can make a difference in the world.…

Sports was not always a fair environment when it comes to race. In this era, around the 1945’s, blacks and whites were not able to play with each other in any sport or allowed to socialize since everything was segregated. Famously, Jackie Robinson was the first African American baseball player to play in the Major League Baseball. He played as a shortstop in his African American league and was an outstanding hitter and base stealer. Each game, he would steal many bases without getting caught.…
Jackie Robinson made history in 1947 when he broke baseball’s color barrier to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers. A talented and versatile player, Robinson won the National League Rookie of the Year award his first season and helped the Dodgers to the National League championship – the first of his six trips to the World Series. In 1949 Robinson won the league MVP award, and he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. Despite his skill, Robinson faced a barrage of insults and threats because of his race. The courage and grace with which Robinson handled the abuses inspired a generation of African Americans to question the doctrine of “separate but equal” and helped pave the way for the Civil Rights Movement.…
In “Free Minds and Hearts at Work” (1952), Jackie Robinson argues that the issue of segregation is diminishing for future Negro generations in America. Robinson supports this claim by first describing his own experience of racial barriers fading when he witnessed for the first time on the field, “Other Negroes, besides me,” then he elaborates on how prejudices and imperfections throughout humankind are dwindling away slowly, but with hope change is possible for the future, finally Robinson uses anaphora, “I believe,” to emphasis his optimistic belief that society can change and improve. Robinson’s purpose is to use euphemism and show how faith can overcome racial challenges in order to elaborate on shrinking separation between Whites and Negroes…
My speech includes how mental disorders can affect a person's everyday life, and this book does a great job of depicting the debilitating factors of having a mental disorder, like anxiety. I will also include some of the methods stated in the book about relieving some of the symptoms of anxiety and, with further research, other methods that correspond with other diagnosable mental disorders. I can also use the information given by the experts, listed in the book, to give my audience a better understanding of why mental disorders arise in the human…
Life with Generalized Anxiety Disorder In the U.S., approximately 3.1% of adults are affected each year by generalized anxiety disorder, causing 1.5-5.4 days of impairment during any given month (Priest, 2015). Anxiety is a commonly experienced emotion in everyday life. Everyone is familiar with the feeling of anxiety from time to time, however, there are individuals who may encounter anxiety at higher levels and rates in which can put them in a debilitating state. Individuals who suffer from such extreme anxiety levels will find a normal, everyday environment to be as overwhelming as a roller coaster ride.…

Anxiety is something I have always been accustomed to, and even some of my earliest memories involve that anxious, nerve stricken feeling in the pit of my stomach. I was always the shy kid in the class, something to grow out of once I grew older, except that was not the case at all. Anxiety and I have grown closer over the years, so much so, that I developed several crippling anxiety disorders that shaped my life and how I lived it. It came on during my high school years and it affected my school work, my home life, and just about every instance in between. I would wake up every morning filled with anxiety dreading the day ahead of me, and waiting for it all to be over.…
A Reflection: The Danger of a Single Story As most people, my story consists of an abundance of struggle, trial and error, and also lessons. These challenges, in addition to the lessons, have brought upon stress, anxiety, and even depression into my life. They have made me question myself to the point of insanity, avoid meeting and accepting new people into my life, and even fail to uphold the bonds I had previously made with both relatives and peers. However, I cannot be defined and bound to the “single story” of my anxiety. There are many more complex stories that represent me even more adequately than the ones that correspond to the struggles I’ve faced; as there are many more stories significant to other various people, places and things…
