Accordingly, I saw my grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins almost everyday. There was never too large of a crowd at my grandmother's house. From eating at my grandmother’s dinner table with my family, I became an early connoisseur of Italian cuisine. In fact, the first meal I learned to cook by myself was pasta. My grandmother taught me how to make sauce from scratch; we would start with her home-canned plum tomatoes, fresh garlic, and basil. Soon enough, I began cooking and baking all kinds of dishes with my grandmother and cousins; I would always eagerly anticipate the result because, after all, who does not love a fresh pastry! Italian food, I came to understand, comes from the heart and is best shared. One of my favorite Christmas gifts was a pizzelle maker, which was given to me from my grandmother. It was a better gift than any toy that I could had received!
