The theme of a story is its main idea and central message. It is the main belief about life that the author is trying to convey to the readers. The theme of a story is visible throughout the plot and in the actions, reactions, motivations and interactions of the characters. A good theme transcends cultural, racial and lingual barriers. The shell symbolizes the civilized democratic order of the island and the lord of the flies represents the dominance of uncivilized behavior on the island. As savagery begins to take over the island, Jack declares the conch to be meaningless as a symbol of authority and its eventual destruction represents the complete eradication of civilization on the island. The destruction of the lord of the flies by Ralph symbolizes his descent into savagery and violence.
The natural loss of innocence is another one of the novel’s major themes. When the boys arrive on the island, they behave like normal children who alternate between enjoying their freedom and being homesick but around the end of the novel these same children turn into bloodthirsty savages who have killed, tortured and hunted humans and animals just like the behavior of adults in their home country. This lose of innocence is similar to the story of the fall of man from paradise.
