After reading the book The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, it could be argued that the main character, Hester Prynne, could be considered either the best citizen or the worst citizen in Boston in the 1600s. However, it is my belief that Hester Prynne should be thought of as the best. Although yes she has committed a crime, adultery, and has expressed hatred for Roger Chillingworth; Hester has done so much to move past that and make up for her terrible mistake. Giving to charity, working as Boston’s seamstress and so much more of her deeds have made Hester the best citizen of Boston. We all know someone who has made a mistake either of little value, or a huge mistake. Everyone has made a mistake, Hester’s just so happened to be totally …show more content…

Her counterpart Mr. Dimmesdale had done the same thing and was the best reverend the city has ever had. She did much more than Dimmesdale as well. While the reverend hid his scarlet letter from the public and failed to admit his crime, Hester’s “A” shone bright on her chest and she rose, above all odds, to help others and live a very productive and selfless life providing to her community. Hester has done this. This is unacceptable and was the reason for her wearing the scarlet letter, as punishment, her whole life. Some believe because Hester has cheated on her husband and had a kid she is not even an okay citizen but the worst. She has done something awful and no matter what she does, Hester will never be able to re pay for her horrible actions committed. Hester also talks about how much she hates Chillingworth throughout the story. These are the reasons for why Hester is not the best but the worst citizen of Boston in the

Throughout the Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne explores themes of conformity through Hester Prynne´s various relationships. Hawthorne illustrates three relationships in which Hester can frequently be seen both conforming to and rejecting societal expectations regarding how a woman should act, and for different purposes. As is demonstrated throughout the novel, Hester will -by nature- resist norms and expectations, but can be seen conforming when doing so will ultimately benefit her. Hester frequently conforms by means of appeasing someone of a higher power, to create a bridge of trust between them. As is reflected in her relationships with the Puritan church, Roger Chillingworth and Arthur Dimmesdale, Hester only conforms to expectations…
