Is Football Dangerous

Football is a wonderful sport, and it has been played for many many years. Over the many years it has been played they have come to find out that it is very dangerous. Getting repeated blows to the head is the main cause for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) and is found in 96 percent of NFL players (Murphy). Football is too dangerous to play for any person because it causes many injuries, some in the brain that can be very traumatic. Football may be dangerous, but it has been America's past time for a very long time. The sport of football first started November 6th, 1869 (google) and has not stopped being played yet. Football is played two different ways depending on where you are in the world. European football is called soccer in American and doesn't really involve contact like American football and the only way to score is by kicking the ball into the goal. American football is played with a oval shaped ball and is played with two teams consisting of eleven players. They players can run, pass, and kick the ball to score. You score by making the ball across the goal line, after you score a touchdown it is followed by a field goal to take your score from six to seven. You can also score by kicking the ball through the field goal from somewhere other than where it is placed after a touchdown. There is also one more way to score and it is if one player tackles another in one's end zone. This sport has been played this way for a long time, but over time they have come to notice there are some problems with the way the sport is played. During the game of football in order to stop someone from scoring you are forced to tackle them. Recent studies have shown that tackling is not the most ideal way for some serious reasons. “Concussions are among the most commonly occurring forms of traumatic brain injuries in the NFL” (Striedter). These horrible brain injuries occur when one's brain slams into their skull. Many this was just apart of the sport until new studies show just how dangerous these injuries can be. But the question will always remain will the sport last if it is putting people’s lives in danger? The NFL (National Football League) has not had to worry there company being shut down, but is the near future where it will be around the corner? These are all question that people want the answer to and will get the answers to very soon. “A concussion results in temporary loss of brain function which occurs from a relatively mild injury to the brain” (Striedter). What this means is that concussions are not that hard to get when playing a sport with such contact. Many players are the victims of this serious brain injury and the numbers were only rising in the sport. The NFL racks in billions of dollars for all they do, so what will happen if the franchise is just abolished? The data will be collected at the end of the year to examine and see if the changes they made to the rules had any effect on the injuries the players sustain. You have to give them props though because they are fighting for their business. I do not absolutely believe that the sport should just be gotten rid of, but I do feel like it is really dangerous. There can be some changes in the equipment and I guess if the changes they did make helped then I do not see any reason for the sport to be over with. There is a few things to take into consideration when you are trying to get the sport banned, ask yourself is it even possible to keep someone ultimately concussion free? Or is it even possible to eliminate any injury in the sport of football? I’m going to have to lean more to the it is not possible side because freak accidents happen and you can not control
