John Wright was not “right”, at least for Minnie Wright. He used to emotionally torture her, abuse her, and isolate her from her loved ones. He was a cruel man who killed her favorite bird by breaking its neck. Ironically, he died the same way, by being strangled.

The Wright house was an isolated place, which is why Minnie felt isolated and miserable. It was “down in a hollow, and the poplar trees around it were lonesome-looking trees.” It was a really isolated place to live. Life is very miserable and dim in the house, especially for women since they were not allowed to step outside of house. They were expected to take care of house and children. Minnie felt more isolated because John would not let her meet her family and friends. She wanted to escape this isolation and ended up killing him.
