Iron Foundry Reflection

“Best ten dollars I ever spent!” I exclaimed to my friend while leaving the Disney Concert Hall. On Thursday November 17th, Dr. Brand and Dr. Posegate from the California Baptist School of Music led a school trip to the Los Angeles (LA) Philharmonic at the Disney Concert Hall. There, we experienced a splendid program, including Mosolov, Dvorak, Sibellius, featuring the talented conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali and solo cellist Johannes Moser. My favorite parts of the program were the performance of The Iron Foundry and the conducting of Rouvali, but I was not as enthusiastic about the Sibellius piece.
My favorite part of the program was the first piece performed, “The Iron Foundry” by Alexander Mosolov. I was not familiar with this piece prior to coming to the concert. In the past, visiting the LA Philharmonic, we listened to more “classical” repertoire, and having

He was expressive and communicative in his conducting, and we, being behind the orchestra, had the opportunity to see him from the orchestra view. His motions were large and his presence filled the hall. My conducting textbook states the conductors should be a “graphic representation of the music.” Rouvali did an exemplary job at this. Watching him helped me understand and appreciate the music better. I knew what the music was saying by watching how he communicated that music to the orchestra.
The events that unfolded that evening caused me to appreciate orchestra more than ever before. Watching the conducting and the instrumentalists up close was enlightening and helped me to understand what was going on in the music. Also, listening to their performance of “The Iron Foundry” was exciting and quite simply, fun. Although not all aspects of the evening were as exciting as that one piece, altogether it was a positive experience. I am excited for the next time I recieve the opportunity to watch the Los Angeles

I appreciated the effort and music the mariachi group gave in their performance. I noticed how the trumpet usually took the main role while the violins supported the trumpets voice, usually by pizzicato. The guitar and guitarrón were mainly the background music that played the same rhythm over and over. It made me realize the beauty of…

On Sunday, June 21st, I went to see the Dallas Symphony Orchestra perform “The Music of John Williams and Hollywood’s Great Composers” at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco. The concert was held in the church’s worship room at 6:30pm. This was a great place for the DSO to perform because the audience and the orchestra were very close and, in a way, felt more personal. The show included fourteen pieces: “Overture to Captain Blood by Korngold, ‘Tara’ – A Short Poem for Orchestra from Gone with the Wind by Steiner, arr.…

Conductors, to instrumental players are individuals who bond the orchestra together by his or her power of keeping the orchestra harmonized under the rhythms, sound capacity, and speed that is proposed to them. Once the orchestra has benefited from the conductor’s authority, the ability of players is advanced in preparation for the productions of remarkable melodies on performance night. On stage, however, conductors are merely live statues to the audience. Rather than awarding the conductor for his or her guidance and involvement in the orchestra that resulted in the phenomenal concert, audience view conductors as well dressed individuals who make small gestures that only connects to the music, and not the players. Furthermore, to Stravinsky…

Upon attending the International Chamber Music Festival Concert, a certain ecstatic vibe could be felt as the performers walked on stage with their musical instruments. The virtuoso’s performed in pieces that contained trios, duets, and quintets; showing the concentration they required when listening to each other. When working on Chamber Music, much of the melody jumps around from instrument to instrument, show casing various solos and much of the instruments having to coincide with each other to carefully listen for the melody. The first performance, was from Mosaics, by Eric Ewazen, only introducing the first movement: I. Barcarolle. The performers Dr. Susan Berdahl (flute), Dr. Xiaohu Zhou (bassoon), and Dr. James Moyer (marimba), all played outstandingly and show cased exactly how Chamber Music is meant to be played.…

The Curtis Chamber Orchestra, played Violin Concerto No.1, No.3, and No 5. All three musical pieces consisted of unique characteristics, but I must say my favorite and the most memorable one is, Concerto No.1 in B-flat major, K. 207 with Hsuan- Hao Hsu on the violin. The downbeat, instantly caught the audience’s attention, bringing focus to the tempo and to its upbeat and joyful theme. It has a very charming and soothing sound to it, that creates more excitement, leaving the audience wanting more.…
