“Best ten dollars I ever spent!” I exclaimed to my friend while leaving the Disney Concert Hall. On Thursday November 17th, Dr. Brand and Dr. Posegate from the California Baptist School of Music led a school trip to the Los Angeles (LA) Philharmonic at the Disney Concert Hall. There, we experienced a splendid program, including Mosolov, Dvorak, Sibellius, featuring the talented conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali and solo cellist Johannes Moser. My favorite parts of the program were the performance of The Iron Foundry and the conducting of Rouvali, but I was not as enthusiastic about the Sibellius piece.

He was expressive and communicative in his conducting, and we, being behind the orchestra, had the opportunity to see him from the orchestra view. His motions were large and his presence filled the hall. My conducting textbook states the conductors should be a “graphic representation of the music.” Rouvali did an exemplary job at this. Watching him helped me understand and appreciate the music better. I knew what the music was saying by watching how he communicated that music to the orchestra.
The events that unfolded that evening caused me to appreciate orchestra more than ever before. Watching the conducting and the instrumentalists up close was enlightening and helped me to understand what was going on in the music. Also, listening to their performance of “The Iron Foundry” was exciting and quite simply, fun. Although not all aspects of the evening were as exciting as that one piece, altogether it was a positive experience. I am excited for the next time I recieve the opportunity to watch the Los Angeles
