According to Erikson (1968), for young adults of age 18 to 40, will enter the sixth developmental stage of Intimacy vs. Isolation. At this stage, emerging adults can be observed to share about themselves more intimately with others. Emerging adults would explore on building long-lasting relationships as well as working on committing to someone other than family members. Though intimacy relationship is often romantic in nature, however, close friendships are important as well.
People who are able to overcome this stage successfully will develop a meaningful and deep relationship with their friends and family, thus forming strong relationships. However, failure to do so would result in one feeling isolated and lonely. These people will experience …show more content…
In terms of gender differences, it is found that there is a difference in the way man and woman express intimacy. Also, it was suggested that women and men are developed in different environment and culture which advocate varied personality characteristics, value system, communication styles, gender roles, problem-solving techniques and expectations for relationships (Weinberger, Hofstein, & Whitbourne, 2008).
In support of the theoretical notion, a large meta-analysis was used to analyse the differences in gender’s self-disclosure pattern. The result revealed that women, in general, disclosed more than men. However, when a close relationship was zoomed in, results showed that the difference between men and women self-disclosure was magnified as women were disclosing more and at a higher degree than men (Dindia & Allen, 1992).
Also, researchers have identified that the language use patterns which differs among gender could leave an impact on the intimacy level whereby men are more prone to the use of assertive speeches while women are more inclined to the use of affiliative speech.
