1. I have read the story of creation in Genesis before, but I had never heard someone interpret the story the way Ekblad does while talking to the prisoners and Julio’s family. Although most people now do not take the story of creation literally, most people also do not seem to dig that deep into the story. Although I think it is a bit of a stretch to take so much away from a few simple verses describing the darkness and chaos before God created the world, I did appreciate how he was able to use those verses to make the Bible more tangible to the inmates. The way he relates the darkness and chaos to the issues the inmates are dealing with every day and how he describes to them that God is always “hovering” around them seemed to grab their attention and make them more confident in their beliefs. These prisoners have sinned, and many of them have deep guilt and feel like God could not welcome them anymore. However, when Ekblad tells them that God made light out of the dark without the darkness having to do anything, the prisoners then understood that God still loves them even though it may seem like their life consists of only darkness and chaos. The death penalty is an issue that has been debated in the United States for a long time, with many arguments on each side. I think this is a major moral issue because the Bible gives conflicting information concerning the matter. One of the ten commandment says “Thou shalt not kill,” while the same book says that the punishment for killing should be death. The lives of convicted murders are at stake, so the argument is not to be taken lightly. I think that each side needs to have respect for each other and understand that each side has some stake in it, like victims’ families such as the Harvey’s and religious figures such as Sister Helen. Each have validity in their point of view to due circumstances, and I think each side needs to respect
