A neurosurgeon is a medical specialist who performs diagnosis or surgical treatment relating to the brain and the spinal cord. They treat disorders such as: acoustic neuroma (a benign tumor of the hearing nerve), angiography (imaging of blood vessels using a certain material for better visualization of vessels), anticoagulant (a medication that prevents coagulation of the blood), etc. To be a neurosurgeon, one must acquire the following characteristics: skillful, licensed, and has patience. The most significant thing about being a neurosurgeon is their journey towards their career.
In 2011, neurosurgeons earn approximately $395,000 as their starting salary. After six years of practice, …show more content…
One surgery that neurosurgeons perform is Craniotomy. A Craniotomy is a surgery ´to cut a bony opening in the skull´. It is performed whenever a person has a brain tumor, hematomas (blood clots), aneurysm, or AVM´s. There are many types craniotomies: frontotemporal, temporal, suboccipital, and parietal. These types of craniotomies are named according to the area of the skull to be removed. ¨Craniotomies are also named according to their size and complexity. Small dime-sized craniotomies are called burr holes or keyhole craniotomies” (mayfieldclinic.com). These ´small dime-sized’ craniotomies are specifically used for a ´minimally invasive procedures: insert a shunt into the ventricles to drain hydrocephalus, insert a deep brain stimulator to treat Parkinsonś disease, insert an ICP monitor, remove a sample of needle biopsy, drain a blood clot, and lastly, insert an endoscope to remove small tumors and clip aneurysm. There are six main procedures during a craniotomy, which will take up to three to 5 hours, or even longer depending on how the patient wants to be treated. To make sure that the surgery’s outcome will be successful, surgeons need to prepare the patient emotionally and physically. The patient will have to undergo ‘fasting’ the night before the surgery. On the day of the surgery, general anesthesia will be administered, which will cause the patient to stay asleep during the operation. Once the patient is composed and settled, neurosurgeons will make a skin incision behind the hairline after ensuring that the scalp has an antiseptic. Sometimes, shaving a portion of the patient’s hair is required for surgeons to operate better. After doing so, surgeons will now open the skull. “The skin and muscles are lifted off the the bone and folded back. Next, one or more smaller burr holes are made in the skull with a drill.” Surgeons cut the outline of a bone flap by inserting a saw through the burr holes; once the bone flap is
