Opiates affect the part of the brain that is responsible for breathing. Opiate overdoses are easily spotted. Some distinguishable signs are a change in breathing, severe sleepiness, dilated pupils, a blue skin tone, from poor circulation, and unresponsiveness (“Recognizing”). It is classified as an opiate antagonist and it works by blocking dangerous and life threating symptoms from high levels of opiates in your blood stream (Naloxone Injection). Narcan can be injected and is now sold in the form of a nasal spray. The medication is used for many things other than overdoses. No man/woman has the right to determine the viability of a human life. We as humans are equal, and deserve to be treated as so. With that being said, regardless of what the case is, Naloxone must be administered to any victim of overdose. But, because of this, others are at risk and resources are monopolized. Police Officers and EMTS are being pulled to the scenes of overdoses, and therefore could potentially not be there for another crime and/or accident. Death from overdose is the leading cause of unintentional death in America. With so many people overdosing, and relapses occurring, too much money is being spent on treatment. To prevent relapse and the misuse of this medicine, further treatment needs to be pushed on to patients. When being released from the hospital, after overdosing, all they are given is a paper with treatment options. This does nothing. Although they almost took their own life, they deserve more help. A further treatment plan would not only help them, but help frustrated law enforcement and EMTS, and society as a whole. Overdoses are heartbreaking and frustrating. They should not occur so frequently or even at all. Humans are supposed to have one life, not 9, like our feline friends.
