“Let’s now turn our heads to chute number one, a hometown cowboy riding this magnificent bull name Chicken on a Chain.” This same phrase is heard all around the world from Rodeo Announcers. Did you know almost 31 million people from all around the world pay large amounts of money to see nearly 600 Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA), National Finals Rodeo (NFR), and local hometown rodeos a year?(Ryan) The thrill of cowboys and cowgirls loading onto 1500 to 2000 pound animals to conquer the leader and to become the best of the best is a wonderful time. During these rodeos people love to watch bull riding, bareback and bronc riding, calf roping, bulldogging, team roping and barrel racing. Most rodeos also have mutton busting and goat tying for children.
During the rodeo children come into the arena and are put on sheep, the one who rides the sheep the longest wins a check and a buckle. During goat tying, a goat is on a leash, the child has to put a string on the goat's tail or take the string off the goat's tail, fastest time wins. As you can tell rodeos are family oriented events that everyone loves. Everyone but People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (P.E.T.A). P.E.T.A doesn’t believe animals are treated correctly during rodeo events. Many questions are aroused from all different spectrums. Many rodeos have the ability to bring people down to the actual rodeo ground before the rodeos. This allows people to see behind the scenes, a lot of questions are already answered this way. Second-generation Stock contractor John Barnes says answering people's questions is one of the most important things. John is also the livestock superintendent for the National Finals Rodeo, he reassured Beef Magazine the animals care comes first. (Ryan) Routine checks of all the animals are done on a daily basis. Animals are dewormed regularly for any parasites on the inside, vaccinations are done regularly and skin care is watched and handled thoroughly. Rodeo animals are used to different surroundings, water and temperature. Most animals are regulated to the same thing everyday, so in return people believe the very busy life rodeo animals live is hard on them. Although this life isn’t the easiest on the animals or the riders, this is a way of life. The rodeo personnel watch the animals routines and know their habits. Animals are a lot like children, when there routine isn’t the same or their acting different than normal then they are coming down with something. Animals and riders are taken care of to the best of the medical fields ability. Rodeo Contractor Barnes says people are so amazed at how the animals react when they get off the trailers and have to load quickly back on the trailers, animals adapt just like anyone else. (Ryan) “Animals are bucked, spurred and

They claim barrel horses are hauled for extensive amount of hours, sore, young barrel horses are rode before they should be and nothing matters other than a time. Many highly disagree with all this being said. Barrel horses are fed the best kind of sweet feed being made, with supplements that help horses with sore muscles, hock problems or anything else that may hurt. Horses are hauled in slant load trailers with drop down windows with hay bags and some have a watering system built in. They are fit before the circuit begins and are properly walked out after a run. Most horses have “Back on Track Blankets” put on after a run or being hauled. These blankets are magnetic and help prevent the horse from getting sore. The magnetic waves help bring blood to the surface and helps healing and makes the horse feel better. They are wrapped in “Back on Track” boots to be hauled in while also being wrapped in a mud or green cool, this helps with pulling tendons tight after a long ride or to cool out the legs after or before a
