In pride and prejudice author describes the importance of marriage in that era. Women weren’t allowed to do jobs as their formal education was limited.it was man’s world where women had to get married and settled with a wealthy man for latter the unmarried women will become a burden on their families and relatives, as they can’t afford to live by themselves. In the play, Mr. Bennet had five Daughters and no sons due to this there family situation could have become worse as no one can bring money after Mr. Bennet retirement. If the daughters didn’t get married on time than later they had to live upon the charity of their cousins and wealthy neighbors which were a very distasteful and humiliating situation for any respectful family. A lot of importance was given to men’s as they were the only source of income in their homes and people consider girls a burden whereas today we women have all the freedom and equality and we no longer have to be dependent on men as we can take care of ourselves and the family. Also, the novel described how a living of alone unmarried women was taken negatively that harms her social standings. If was considered very shameful and believed that women shouldn’t live with someone who is not from in the family. An example of this is shown in Pride and prejudice that whenever Bennet family women travel somewhere they always make sure that they have the company of respectful women or a relative. This was the set society had forced on women. In pride and Prejudice Mrs. Bennet Elizabeth’s mother forced her to get married to marry Mr. Collins because he was about to inherit an estate. Mrs. Bennet was more into the thought that the more wealthy the person is the more happiness he can give to her daughters but Elizabeth wasn’t pleased by her mother’s thought and he refuses the proposal as she believes that love is more important than married. Further, the circumstances for her friend wasn’t same as Elizabeth’s as she was getting older and didn’t find anyone that she liked latter she end up marrying Mr. Collins not because she loves him but only because she was bound with the thought that married is very important for women.
