The Indigenous people want to regain self-governance from the non-indigenous people. “Indigenous self-government is the formal structure through which Indigenous communities may control the administration of their people, land, resources and related programs and policies, through agreements with federal and provincial governments” (Indigenous Self-Government in Canada). In 1867, the British North American Act was introduced that gave the European government authority to make laws regarding Indians and the land reserved for the Indians (Indigenous Corporate Training). The Indian Act was the enforced in 1876, the main purpose of this act was to control and assimilate Indigenous into Canada. It focused on three aspects including, band councils, reserves, and status (How the Indian Act Made Indians Act Like Indians). Indigenous self-government is also seen as an “inherent right” by Indigenous people as the Creator gave them these responsibilities and it was never something that could be passed around (Indigenous Corporate Training). The Government of Canada has created a policy guide called Aboriginal Self-Government- the Government of Canada’s Approach to Implementation of the Inherent Right and the Negotiation of Aboriginal Self-Government, this policy was created to give Indigenous people the “right to govern themselves in relation to matters that are internal to their communities, integral to their unique cultures, identities, traditions, languages and institutions, and with respect to their special relationship to their land and their resource” (Indigenous Corporate Training). With programs available, this will make it easier for Indigenous people to get involved, which will then result in a larger outcome during protests and votes. Therefore, there will be more of the indigenous community contributing to making their community self-governing. In addition, resources and programs available will eliminate one step for Indigenous people to take when they are trying to get involved. Therefore, this action needs to be taken by the Indigenous people but also supported by the non-indigenous
