On one of Yellin’s many interviews about “Incidence in a life of a Slave girl”, she declared that Harriet Jacobs is her hero, because she was able to overcome many obstacles in her lifetime. After analyzing Yellin’s interview one particular part stood out to me, which was when she stated that Harriet managed to cope with her master prevention of marrying the young man of her dreams. Through this novel, she was also able to inform many northerners of the sexual, physical and emotional abuse female slaves endured at the hands of their master. Jacobs also wanted to show non-slaves that slaves are people and they should be treated as humans instead of animals. She wanted to show outsiders that slaves wanted to engage in social customs, among their peers but weren’t allowed. The main reason Harriet Jacobs wrote her novel was for her voice to be heard by anyone who was willing to listen, which is what she was able to accomplish even after her
