In part one “In the shadow of Mount Elgon” we are first introduced to Mr. Charles Monet. Charles is fifty six years old and takes care of a sugar factory’s water pumping machinery. Monet lives at the base of Mount Elgon in western Kenya. Monet decided to go on a camping trip for his winter holiday. The place where he wanted to camp was at a national park on Mount Elgon. On day two of Monet’s trip he decided to visit Kitum Cave. Kitum cave was a popular tourist attraction where people could go and see a petrified rainforest other things such as crystal formations. Inside of this cave there were many bats on the roof of the cave, and guano covered the floor and walls.
Days after the trip Charles developed a severe migraine. The migraine stopped him from going to work. He slowly grew more and more ill. His housekeeper thought that he was becoming a zombie. Some colleagues came to see him and when they saw his condition they had to rush him to the nearest hospital. They were told that they needed to travel to a hospital in Nairobi. On the flight charles throws up blood. When they get to the hospital Charles collapsed on the floor. Doctor Musoke tried to get blood out of charles throat and this causes him to throw up blood all over the doctor. Monet died the next morning. Days after the death of Monet, Musoke contracted similar symptoms like Monet. Musoke was tested and it was confirmed that he was positive with Marburg virus. The hospital was shut down and quarantined. All staff that worked with Musoke were quarantined. Later in the first part of the book we meet Nancy Jaax. She is a mother and a wife in Maryland. Nancy works at the USAMRIID. She is a pathologist for Jonson’s Ebola experiment. There nancy infects lab monkeys with ebola and uses different drugs on them to see if it is effective against the virus. Nancy gets into her hazard suit and then enters the hot zone. She takes the first dead monkey away to dissect it and then notices that she has a rip in her glove. She takes her glove off and sees that the blood of the dead monkey had smeared over her second glove. There was a cut on her hand and she was scared that she had been infected. She was scared because she thought that she would die from the exposure to the blood. She cleaned her glove and proceeded to fill it with water to check for any leaks. The glove held water and relieved Nancy of her initial fear. Weeks after this incident two of the control monkeys developed symptoms of ebola. Nancy finally concluded that ebola was airborne. This was called the monkey house. The house got a 100 monkey shipment and two of the monkeys were dead on arrival. The rest of the monkeys were put in holding rooms around the building. Less than a month later they notice that a lot of the monkeys were starting to die in large amounts. A large amount of deaths were happening in holding room F.
A veterinarian was called to look at the monkeys and he noticed that there were two monkeys with droopy eyelids. Those monkeys died that night. The monkeys were dissected and it was noted that the monkeys spleens were enlarged. There was also blood in the monkeys intestines. The vet suspected that the monkeys died from a simian hemorrhagic fever. Samples of the dead monkey tissues were sent USAMRIID (Where Nancy Jaax works).
An intern named Tom Geisbert examines the samples of the Virginian monkeys and finds something peculiar. When tom examines the tissue samples he finds what he initially thinks is Marburg virus. Tom takes Pictures of the virus to his superior Peter.Peter and tom look at textbooks and realize that they are dealing with a very dangerous virus.A meeting is set up with the USAMRIID and Peter. Peter confirms that they have found the monkeys and found Ebola zaire. It is decided that they will euthanize the monkeys and take the samples of the ebola virus back to the USAMRIID
