They start to work and live on their own when they get information that they can move to a catholic monastery for a chance to escape a life of hiding in China and be free in South Korea. They did this despite not being catholic and had to work for this monastery till they got their chance to leave. This escape plan was anything but a sure fire way of getting to South Korea because it involved them crossing the Gobi desert to get to the Mongolian boarder. So they went out with another family to cross the desert and get to the Mongolia boarder. They needed to cross the desert at night during freezing temperatures. Yeonmi and the others were told to dress lightly and were risking hypothermia. They also got lost easily because they would losses their sense of direction and would end up wondering around aimlessly. They knew that it was very possible that they could get lost, freeze to death, or be captured on their way to the boarder but they didn’t care as long as they had a chance of freedom. Then they reach the boarder and are taken by the Mongolian army and are so scared that they might be sent back to North Korea. This was such a terrifying thought that Yeonmi her mother almost attempted suicide and were about to do so till they were dropped off at a camp. In this camp is where the Mongolian government kept North Koreans till they move them to South Korea.
