Winning Isn’t Everything OR The Only Thing

The feeling of winning is great, right? In most instances, yes, it is. To achieve something that has had a lot of hard work put into it makes one feel accomplished. One time, a well-known, respected football coach said, “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” I disagree with this statement for several reasons.

There are many occasions where winning is the priority but along the way, one discovers that even if they don’t win, they can still have a good time. One example is auditioning for a sports team, choir, part in a play, etc. and not making it in. This can be hurtful at first but everything happens for a reason. Personally, when I audition for an all state choir and don’t make

Imagine two people playing a game of monopoly, resulting in one winning and rubbing it in the other one’s face. It makes that other person mad at the winner, which in turn causes the winner to be mad as well, and now that win means nothing. Also, in a Nascar race where winning is the main goal, the drivers who don’t win but showed a good effort still get recognized for trying their best because that’s all they really could do. I think that if someone has to cheat to win, then they didn’t really win. If a football team believed that the only thing that mattered was winning and decided to cheat to get there, they’ve already lost in my eyes. Good sportsmanship and a great effort shows that a team knows they’re good and are willing to accept that there may be someone better than them. That should motivate them to do even better next time. Cheating to win a class review game is pointless as well. The point of the review game is to see how much one has learned and if someone cheats to win, then they didn’t really learn anything. Nevertheless, some people believe that winning is the only way they’ll be happy, but they won’t truly be happy if they can’t appreciate the road it took to get to

What would life be like if everyone got an award for simply showing up to work, school, and sports? Based on the "Trophies for All" policy every youth athlete gets a trophy for simply coming to games and practices. Participation trophies do not prepare these future adults to live and work in the real world. These youth athletes also need to know that you have to work hard to get what you want. Over and over and over again I messed up, bumbling into the other girls and singing notes that were not only wrong, but much too quiet as well. However, I thought I did okay, and went back home to hear the verdict. A few days later, the list was posted on the door outside the choir room. My name was not on it. The teacher told us that if we wanted to talk to her civilly about why we did not make show choir, we could meet her in her office after class.…

“Sometimes you win, and sometimes you learn” - Robert T. Kiyosaki. Life is not always about winning, and as we grow up we teach ourselves that, and we learn that. But what if certain things in life are teaching kids otherwise? The articles “You Don’t Get Participation Awards For Showing Up At Work” by Don Yaeger and “Participation Trophies Aren’t What's Wrong With Kids These Days” by Bob Cook, argued whether or not the youth should be given trophies for participating in activities.…

I joined my school’s wrestling team during my junior year of high school and went into this new environment with 0 years of prior training and 16 years of “Girls don’t really wrestle”. I was determined to excel during my first wrestling experience to challenge the skepticism that surrounded girl wrestlers. Despite this resolve, I was terrified at the thought of having to actually wrestle someone, so when I found out that my first wrestling match would be against a small, unassuming girl 20 pounds lighter than me, I was relieved. With newfound hope, I went into my match thinking, “How could I possibly lose to someone half my size?”…

We as a society have come to believe that everybody should feel good at all times, and no one should be left out. We start with the youth and the "everybody gets a trophy" mentality. Sure, it makes you feel great to get rewarded for doing something great but after having a horrible season, a trophy just seems to add insult to injury. Now I'm not talking about the 6 year olds who come on to the field and give it their all for the fun of just playing a sport (score should not even be kept at this age, just let the little players find out if they even like the game), but when 13 and 14 year olds expect a trophy for showing up, I draw the line and I believe rightfully so.…

Trophies are a big deal. They are a solid representation that a person completed this or excelled in that. For most people, the physical reminder is the key piece to the memory. Sports teams should always give out trophies, but those trophies should be given out to only the best players or best teams. If trophies are given out as participation awards, they lose their meaning and athletes wouldn’t give their best efforts. Athletes should have to work for a trophy instead of just showing up to receive a trophy. Trophies should be a motivational tool not something that could potentially encourage athletes to decrease their efforts. To earn a trophy, athletes should have to prepare and perform above average.…

Through my experience, my freshman and sophomore years as a musician were terrifying. On top of the shock of the new atmosphere at school, I had to play my instrument with and in front of others, which was quite a stretch for me at the time. I would always beat myself up about minute mistakes I had glorified during rehearsals, playing tests, and especially auditions. However, after I did not make an Illinois Allstate ensemble my junior year, my approach to these nerve-wracking situations completely changed. Gordon B. Hinckley had once said something along the lines of hard work paying off, if effort is enforced into the work. Over the years I’ve had in high school I have really absorbed the aspect of this, being able to work up and achieve opportunities for the preparation in the outside world. Seventh and eighth grade having to understand the concepts in the athletic sport tennis was hard for me to comprehend. Actually being able to have proper etiquette of holding a tennis racquet was key, but being able to hit a tennis ball was a ‘whole other ball game.’ All two years of playing tennis in middle school I can not remember a single time me nor my tennis partner won a match.…
