The feeling of winning is great, right? In most instances, yes, it is. To achieve something that has had a lot of hard work put into it makes one feel accomplished. One time, a well-known, respected football coach said, “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” I disagree with this statement for several reasons.
There are many occasions where winning is the priority but along the way, one discovers that even if they don’t win, they can still have a good time. One example is auditioning for a sports team, choir, part in a play, etc. and not making it in. This can be hurtful at first but everything happens for a reason. Imagine two people playing a game of monopoly, resulting in one winning and rubbing it in the other one’s face. It makes that other person mad at the winner, which in turn causes the winner to be mad as well, and now that win means nothing. Also, in a Nascar race where winning is the main goal, the drivers who don’t win but showed a good effort still get recognized for trying their best because that’s all they really could do. I think that if someone has to cheat to win, then they didn’t really win. If a football team believed that the only thing that mattered was winning and decided to cheat to get there, they’ve already lost in my eyes. Good sportsmanship and a great effort shows that a team knows they’re good and are willing to accept that there may be someone better than them. That should motivate them to do even better next time. Cheating to win a class review game is pointless as well. The point of the review game is to see how much one has learned and if someone cheats to win, then they didn’t really learn anything. Nevertheless, some people believe that winning is the only way they’ll be happy, but they won’t truly be happy if they can’t appreciate the road it took to get to
