I. Referral:
The first part of the special education is the referral. There must be a written request that can be done by parents, school personnel, school district staff, or anyone else that is knowledgeable about the student. The written request must state why the person requesting the referral believes the student may need special education services. The referral will need to be given to an appropriate school staff member that is involved with special education. It will also need to be given to the special education director for the district. A decision to either evaluate the student or will be made by the district based on existing data, medical information, and performance.

Every IEP written is different, but they all must contain the same components mandated by law. An IEP must state the student’s present level of performance. This includes strengths, weaknesses, current abilities and skills. In an IEP, you will see the results of the student’s evaluations and assessments. IEP’s will have the services to be provided both special education and/or other related services such as speech therapy and etc. There will be modifications and accommodations listed that will be used for the individual students. These assist the student’s learning in the general education classroom. Modifications are adjustments made in the regular classroom to meet the needs of a student for academic success. Some of these modifications may include: highlighted important sentences, more time on an assignment, abbreviated assignments, use of calculator and etc. There may also be supplementary aids and services stated such as specific technology use and possibly a one on one aid. The IEP must include an annual report of educational goals. They must be measurable, realistic, and achievable by the student. These are discussed and decided upon by the multi-disciplinary team. It contains the description of how the progress will be monitored and communicated to parents. The case manager for our district is our Local Education Agency (LEA) Supervisor. She is the special education director for our district.
B. Our evaluation conferences at my school are done by the co-op.
C. The special education teacher and the special education supervisor are responsible for notifying the parents about eligibility.
D. The IEP conferences at my school are conducted by the special education teachers.
Reflection
1. In this assignment, I learned the exact process used to identify students requiring special education services. As a regular education teacher, we feel we know that a student should be receiving SPED services but I learned that there are criteria that must be met. Now, I know why it took so long to get students the help they needed beyond the regular classroom. It seemed to take too long for a student to be placed where they truly needed to be, but I see now that there are way more factors involved than just my opinion.
2. The information in the application process was given to me by my building principal. All other information, I read and collected on my
