Unfortunately, if I were to go up and ask anyone what the 2nd Amendment was, most likely, they would only be able to give me half. That half being, “the right to bear arms”. The rest of the Amendment is unknown to most, which gives us a false understanding about what the Amendment really means. “Arms” can mean anywhere from a handheld gun, rifle, machine gun, grenade launcher, and flamethrower, to name a few. When the Constitution was made, grenade launchers, flamethrowers, and machine guns did not exist. Fortunately, the Supreme Court has decided, that only certain types of firearms are to be owned. This then means, that people’s rights are infringed upon, because they cannot own any firearm they wish.
Now that there is a bit of clarification, mainly that the 2nd Amendment is extremely outdated. Reform of the 2nd Amendment can now be focused on. Honestly, I am not sure that we could be able to keep the 2nd Amendment while not infringing on our rights. As I said before, our rights are already being infringed upon, as is. What is clear, is the need for some major modifications to the 2nd Amendment to suit society’s/America’s needs.
