But one must still remember that you must encourage children to do their best. Encouragement in its simplest form is telling them when they do something right and correcting when they are wrong and showing them how to fix it. The easiest way for me to do this is on papers and project. I want them to understand that their writing isn’t bad, hopefully. But I want my students to understand I am their history teacher; I do not care all that much about grammar. Now if the grammar is horrible then there will be points taken off. But I want them to understand the content that I am teacher. I want them to form their own ideas of history and convey them into words. I will write how good their writing is but also point out where there are problems but then finish with a statement about how they have improved. I need to show them that I am laid back but I still demand certain things. I demand that you show respect for myself and the other students; where you want to be here doesn’t matter because there are students that are here to learn and want hear what I am say. I demand that you take the tests and quizzes where you care about the answers or not. I demand that if you are doing group work you will show some effort for the sake of your classmates grades. If you do not follow these simple rules, then I have a three strike rule. One warning, followed by a meeting one on one and a call home, finally a meeting with just your parents. They warning allows the kids to know I am listening. The second shows that I want to hear what I going on from with you from you but you still did not follow my rule and I need to let your parents know. The final step is to allow your parents a chance to see that the stories, everyone has about their teachers, are not true or they are. Also with the parent meeting I can work out a way to help the student become better. I want my students to see and understand I am invested in them and their
