Key Components of a Comprehensive Cultural Assessment
There are twelve key components of conducting a comprehensive cultural assessment which include biocultural variations and aspects of the incidence of disease, communication, cultural affiliation, cultural sanctions and restrictions, developmental considerations, economics, education background, health related beliefs, kinship and social networks, nutrition, religion and spirituality, and values orientation. During communication we tend to look at make direct eye contact. When an individual does not make eye contact while speaking we consider that to be rude and means that they are not listing to what we are day. We must understand that this is different between cultures and not making direct eye contact may be a culture norm. Making this observation during the cultural assessment can assure that both parties are communicating effectively. Next I will explore cultural sanction; we as Germans tend to show more negative feeling than Americans. America as a culture tend to focus on the positive and avoiding negative beliefs. I must take that into consideration when caring for patients like this and focus on positive
