According to McCarthy (1992) a classic piece of literature doesn’t always mean that the piece is a favorite or a best seller. It might just be that the term “classic literature” is a relative to the reader and their reading preferences but in the classroom are there are guidelines in making that decision? One of the first criteria that is usually looked at is the question of has the piece stood the test of time and has receiving lasting recognition. Classics usually always impact society in some manner and invite the reading to gain a deeper appreciation of the theme or message of the book. A simple definition of a classic, is a piece of literature that readers will still be talking about 50 years from now. After reading many debates on the official definition of what is classic is or is not one thing that seems to radiate through them all is that they continue to be discussed throughout the years, even though there is a set number or years. Many feel that the author of the work must be deceased in order for the work to be considered a classic. Many school districts have compiled lists of books that they consider to be classic by their own standards and so require that students all experience these particular works. What are the benefits that are acquired from reading classic literature? The choice to read classics above other literary works is one that is also favored by many English and Language arts teachers. According to Santoli & Wagner (2004) many teachers, parents and administrators believe that very definition of teaching literature means teaching students the classics. It is through reading classics that students gain exposure to mainstream culture, philosophical beliefs, and ethical values of the world.
