Before communities, systems and law there were tribes. Each tribe was different, and had different rules and cultures. Some tribes still survive to this day, and still follow their traditions and their culture. The Bhil tribe is one of these tribes. The Bhil tribe is very unique and is the largest tribe of South Asia. The Bhil tribals are also known as the bow men of Rajasthan or ‘The Archers’. They are located mainly in Northern India and in the mountain regions, and some have spread to Maharashtra. They speak Bhili which is an indo-aryan language. Their main source of income/occupation is agriculture and animal husbandry. The women wear saris and the men wear loose frocks or kurta with pyjama. The Bhils also wear brass ornaments, and are known to be tall and well-built people. They are also known for being independent, truthful and simple people. They mainly practice agriculture for daily livelihood and weekly they sell products at ‘Haats’ or markets. Despite the fact that the Bhil spend lots of time in agriculture, there variety of food isn’t big. Their main food is maize or products from maize. They also eat wheat on special occasions. When Bhils are cooking a stranger is prohibited from entering the cooking area because the Bhils believe that it can cause loss of appetite, sickness etc. and can even cause death! They also do not taste the food while cooking because they believe that the food would become ‘Jutha’. Before cooking the women also clean the whole house and wash their hands to remove anything due to an evil spirit. Their customs and life are very interesting and different from other
