Is it understandable and normal that people concerning on their appearance?

Nowadays, many people raising a concern about people over concern about their appearance. In some cases, people would even over makeup themselves in order to provide the best appearance to others or even more extreme ways such as doing cosmetic surgery. However, people are starting to raise a concern that, the level of concerning about owns appearance has already gone too far, it ends up to be unacceptable and abnormal. This essay will focus on the reason behind the phenomenon and find out that concerning about self appearance could be understandable and normal, it is because the appearance of a person could be very important and influential to daily life.

People pay a lot of afford that concerning about their appearance is understandable and normal, as this ability was developed since birth or even it is an innate ability. The concern about one’s own appearance could be associate with the psychological phenomenon called self-conscious. According to A. Cash (2013), awareness and concern on appearance is one of the most significant aspect showing one’s self-consciousness. It mentioned a research by Michael Lewis and Jeanne Brooks-Gunn in 1979, a person who started to discover self-awareness at the age of 5-6 month-olds when that person first facing the mirror and sees self as self, then it developed the state of self-conscious around 18-24 month-olds which a person started distinguishing good or embarrassing act including owns appearance. The act that a person concerning about own appearance was developed since birth, it is and act that associate with the achieving the state of self-conscious, which is natural and normal. Therefore, a person concerning about owns appearance is an innate ability since birth, it is understandable and normal. It is also an important factor that giving others a good impression, especially for the first impression. Basically through tiding up or making up of their appearance in order to give the best impression to others. According to N. According to the research done by the University of Buffalo in New York, it was suggested that over concerning about self appearance could be harmful to health. As most people are appeared like a healthy person, with good body-shape and balanced life. However, the research found out, most of these people are physically unhealthy as they would use improper ways to keep themselves health, such as avoid eating and doing exercise excessively. However, according to N. Staff (2012), the appearance of a person is highly affecting others judging on one’s personality. Therefore, we could not avoid to concern about our appearance. It is because appearance is a form of nonverbal communication and which is the largest part between humans’ interactions, so it is deeply affecting our life. To compensate the consequence, Dr. Lora Park developed an appearance-based rejection sensitivity (ASR) scoring system to analysis the affects on appearance (Reuters, 2007). Base on the ASR system, she found out that the level of concern toward self appearance does not directly proportion to personal healthiness. It is because it is depending on the method that people use to maintain owns’ appearance and being positive towards about self.
