Background information: Cloning is a process where the DNA is replicated. It is done by having the DNA of an organism, human or animal, is put into an egg whose DNA is removed and when the egg is stimulated, the egg starts to duplicate. The results would be DNA is which genetically similar to the original organism. Cloning can also be applied to cells. The first mammal that was cloned successfully from an adult cell was the sheep named Dolly in the year 1996 by Scottish scientists in the Roslin Institute.
Importance of Cloning and how it is being used: Cloning allows scientists to find out about what proteins are present and what they do and also allows them to find out what happens in the cell when the protein is changed. Cloning also …show more content…
Millions of women along with their partners are infertile, with cloning it is possible for them to have children via “reproductive cloning”. It may be possible for renowned people such as Einstein and Newton to be reborn so they may contribute more to their respective fields. Lastly, by cloning insects that help in controlling plagues, it would help reduce agricultural damage and also it would reduce the need and usage of pesticides and insecticides. Disadvantages of Cloning: Disadvantages of cloning consists of the uncertainty behind it, genetic diseases may be inherited and rejection of organs.
Even though cloning have been successful as shown in the cloning of the sheep known as Dolly, 250 eggs were used in the cloning but only one was successful. Currently, only 1 to 10% of attempted cloning of offspring is successful. Also, when somatic cells are extracted, they are randomized. This makes it so scientists cannot tell exactly which cells contain traits that contain diseases or genetic disorders. Lastly, even though the cloned organs use the recipients’ cells, there is a chance of cell mutation which causes the organ to be
