Social media is a powerful tool used to dictate our society in many ways, sometimes more than we could imagine. It’s a force so strong that it influences people from what they should wear, buy, eat and even what to listen to on the radio. It can influence decision and change people’s perspective on things just because it’s said on the media in a certain way. “Bullying is far different today than it was even a decade ago. The entwining of social media in adolescents’ social lives has created a whole new environment for abuse” (Leung, 2012, para.3). What does that really mean? It means that bullying can now be done behind the screen through social media networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Formspring etc. According to Dailymail. “It found 28 per cent of children aged 11 to 16 had experienced bullying on the internet or via a mobile phone” (Brooke, 2012, para.2). One mother said who which her daughter was a victim of cyberbullying “You can’t get away from cyber-bullies unless you take everything away from [your kids] and you can’t do that” (Leung, 2012, para.9). Thus, meaning that where ever these victims of bullying go, the harassments and threats will go on. It’s amazing how all our time spent each day, a huge amount goes to social media. Nowadays people would rather talk to you through a computer screen then engage in a face to face interactions. Stats on infographic show that “Among 15-24 year olds, between July 2010 and October 2011, engagement with email and instant messaging fell 22% and 42%, respectively, while social media engagement rose 34%” (Fox, 2012, source9). Thus, you see social media networks are slowly on the rise and are taking up our time, its eating away our productivity to do beneficial actions.
