For example, in Cloudy Day by Jimmy Santiago Baca it states, “the tower like a cornstalk, and snap it from its root of rock.” In addition the poem Wood-pile by Robert Frost it says, “Out walking in the frozen swamp on a grey day.” Both of these poems give descriptive words to help the reader picture the setting of the story that is being told. Lastly, in the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald it uses a lot of imagery to help with the plot of the story such as, “the interior was unprosperous and bare, the only car visible was the dust-colored wreck of a Ford which

Frederick Douglass and His Use of Rhetorical Devices “The political character of one’s actions is inextricably bound to the political status of one’s subjectivity.” So says Frank B. Wilderson III, a writer focusing on critical and racial theory. For many authors, their message is heavily impacted not only by how they relate to the message, but through their style of writing itself. In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, the author has an incredibly personal connection to the anecdotes presented and retells his feelings regarding subjectivity when he was under the chains of slavery. However, Frederick Douglass does not only rely on retelling past experiences to convey a message to his readers.…

The last example of imagery is personification. In Fahrenheit 451 the personified thing was the mechanical hound. Most of the firemen saw it as just a regular harmless dog, but Montag saw more than that. Montag saw a computerized dog that hated him and was out to get him. “It would be easy for someone to set up a partial combination on the Hound’s ‘memory,’ a touch of amino acids, perhaps.…

In George Orwell’s work, Politics and the English Language, Orwell makes many points as to why the English language is collapsing, especially in political writing. Impropriety in the English language has been passed about much like tradition and has not seemed to have stopped. Ambiguity in political writing has made it dry with no imagery in the words or metaphors used, which is often done incorrectly. Orwell uses several phrases from other professors and politicians as examples to explain why they are lacking imagery, pretentiousness, and what he described as 'ugly' wording/phrasing.…

Fabricating imagery is a good use of style. Using descriptive words in each sentence helps readers imagine what is happening in the story. For instance, the sentence “I saw her reach into the wet garbage bag and fish around in there looking for a lost teaspoon BAREHANDED- a kind of mad courage,” makes the readers feel involved in the story as if they were the ones digging into the trash for the teaspoon. Fulgham does an extravagant job of creating imagery in “Dinner Dandruff”. After describing his mother's courageous adventure in the trash, he describes where the spoon was in the trash.…

One example of the way he uses imagery is when describing the hound: “Fire burst from its mouth, its eyes glowed with a smoldering glare, its muzzle and hackles and dewlap were outlined in flickering flame” (149). Within this sentence we see the image of fire come into play. Doyle's vision for the hound tr anslated across as being a fire-breathing creature with a demonic appearance. As a reader, the image of a fire-breathing monster running towards you is very frightening, but it is what makes the story so captivating. This very section in the novel is successful in translating specific images across to the reader, also getting the feel of adrenaline that comes with…

Fitzgerald uses Nick as an epistemic narrator and Gatsby as an axiological narrator to portray the story through two varying perspectives, one from whom the story was written about and the other not a main character. Double vision is also repetitively used to emphasise the dramatic tension going on being the two differing objects or ideas. The West Egg and East Egg are one example of Fitzgerald’s double vision. Adding to the book as a whole, the narratives and double vision aid the reader feel as if they are experiencing it.…

Frost was himself a farmer all his life, from early boyhood down to his ripe old age. Poetry was his vocation, but farming was his avocation. He combined the two, and this gave him an intimate knowledge of the life of the farmer, and hence arises the veracity and truthfulness of his depictions of rural life. His people are always busy with some solid work, whether it is apple-picking, mowing or mending walls. In After Apple Picking, the man who falls asleep, after picking apples, dreams of nothing but apples.…

The roaring 20’s people called it. Industry and development were high, and so were the businessmen. Behind closed doors in the extravagant parties thrown were the bootleggers, gangsters, stockmen; all there to make a profit before the unbeknownst Great Depression came. Alongside the antics of the men were the new women; the flappers, who had short hair, smoked, drank and most importantly, were beginning to have rights. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 tragic love story, ‘The Great Gatsby’ opens a time portal that takes you back to the 1920’s and can make you nostalgic for a life you never even lived.…
