After the film had aired, both Theo van Gogh and Hirsi Ali received thousands of death threats, which resulted in the murder of Theo Van Gogh and the seclusion of Hirsi Ali. According to some scholars, Theo van Gogh’s troubled history with the Muslim community justified the leaders blaming the film that for spreading Islam phobia. Theo van Gogh was a well-known Dutch filmmaker/author and is the great grand nephew of the famous painter Vincent van Gogh. Unfortunately, Theo van Gogh was not famous for his well written books or inspiring documentaries but rather for his controversial outspoken opinions on Muslims, Jews and Christians or as I say the “former Donald Trump” of his time.…
Since Salman Rushdie was condemned to death by the Ayatollah for his book, “The Satanic Verses.” I have been intrigued on how anyone could write something and have such a large group of people want you dead. The last 10 years has shown us how radical Islam is showing how cruel and brutal they can be with no compromise. In 1993, the judges for the “Booker of Bookers panel explicitly singled out Midnight’s Children for novelty of content and the three judges agreed that Rushdie's...stood above the rest….” W. L. Webb, one of the judges, summed up the thinking of the panel when he concluded that Midnight's Children "changed the way we understand a violently changing world” (Su).…
In the article, “Obnoxious Freedom” by David Horsey, the author provides his input on the recent attacks by Islamic terrorists on the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. David Horsey is an american writer and is writing for readers throughout the United States. The article expresses his opinions on freedoms of speech and influenced by the values found in the U.S. If the writer was in a more Islamic country or a country with less freedoms, he would have been more careful with his word choice and possible even changed the message of the article. David Horsey wrote about this event because he is also a writer and wanted to convey his own views on the issue.…

Beginning in British Columbia in 2008, two Muslim doctors each filed a complaint with the Tribunal, against the well-known Roger’s Publishing . The article published through Roger’s describes all Muslims as having serious ambitions for world religious domination, and that they will use violence to achieve this supposed goal. The Tribunal’s decision was to dismiss this complaint and I agree with their decision. Although I strongly believe there exists situations where freedom of expression must be limited, this is not of these situations. In this case, the article was merely expressing an opinion in a way that was not hateful or filled with contempt.…
Having Free Speech is the basic right that Americans have, it is the ability to speaks one’s mind and ideas. Theres are many benefits to having the ability to project ideas without censorship. Caleb Yong author of “Does Freedom of Speech Include Hate Speech?” argues that the liberal justice has a special protection against the restriction of speech and expression, he calls it “Free Speech Principle” where it includes its “sensitivity to the distinction between coverage and protection (Yong)” that the speech should be monitored. Hate speech is too broad to single out the negative effect that it can have in any group. The main concept of this article includes the four categories that hate speech can be set in.…
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed wrote the article “The Language of War is Killing”. The topic of his article is, if it’s right to kill victims in war. His main claim was it is life, and you have to kill; killing is justified in both war and life. The article was written to argue about whether its right to kill in war or not. Some people may feel this article is specifically directed toward people in the U.S., and the many people who are dealing or involved with war.…
Over the years as citizens of a country that has the freedom of speech and freedom of the press, I’ve seen many different marches, riots, and just plain violent acts to prove a point. But looking at all that sometimes it’s hard to say if I even saw it how it actually happened. Many people hear about riots on the news and in newspapers, and those are usually very biased one way or another. After reading Akiba Solomon’s essay on rioters, it showed me how biased the media can really be and in a way racist. Through this essay it talks of a few different times white people have rioted versus a few time black people have rioted.…

Gun control has been a prominent discussion topic for numerous years now. Many problems are introduced and many solutions are suggested, yet the issue seems to continue to arise in debates around the country. This dialogue surfaces again, mostly, after a school shooting occurs. Whether talking about the Virginia Tech shooting or the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, when tragedies like these occur, the conversation of gun control in the United States reignites. The Columbine High School shooting is one of the most famous massacres and is still discussed today.…
All people should be given the right to say what they want America was made for Freedom that includes freedom of speech we all have different options but we all have the right to express your selves for our society is part of free speech. For we have the right to make jokes about ISIS for example but because we make jokes that mean nothing to us people from different places may get angry at us and some will even kill us even if we draw someone they just might kill us. Like the cartoonists killed for drawing Mohammed. Colleges are limiting free speech they are basically saying “Oh no you can’t say bad things to students you bad boy/girl now go into the safe room and eat your milk and cookies you can talk about them all the time you are in there.” Comedians have sworn off performing at colleges because they say students can’t take a joke.…
The events in our society had led to anger, and hatred toward Muslims. Hate crimes have increased immensely after the recent events as mention on The Rise of Hate Search article. The hatred has been present because there were many innocent lives that were lost due to inhumane events. The number of anti-Muslims has increased “According to our model, when all the data is analyze by the F.B.I. there have been more than 200 anti-Muslim attacks in 2015, making it the worst year since 2001” (Perry). As terrorism events continue to grow, the society will view Muslims as “monsters”.…
Freedom of speech and the Constitution We are all fortunate enough to have the freedom of speech, it is given to us as americans being ruled under the american constitution. We find the right to speak our minds in the first amendment of the constitution. Freedom of speech is taken a couple of ways, some of these are positive some may not have the same positive spin. Some people think we can say anything we like, no matter how controversial it maybe, without fear of punishment. Some think that the freedom of speech only protects speech, where some believe it protects art, and writing and any type of expression.…
Emily Dickinson is well known for her unusual poems, however during her life she wasn’t famous till after she passed away when her family started to find 1000’s of her poems stuff in tiny spaces all around the house. Dickinson’s writing wasn’t well understood during her time, she had a uniqueness that was ahead of her time; she had an amazing use of symbols, capitalism, themes and tones in her writing which make reading her poems so intriguing. While growing up she wasn’t the average women, she had her own thoughts and beliefs which is something I love about her which brings me to one of my favorite poems by her: “I’m Nobody! Who are you?” I 'm Nobody!…
