What is Where Illegal immigration occurs all over the world, including of the developed country of the United States of America. Illegal immigration is the act of unauthorized or undocumented immigrants taking resident in a country (ProCon.org, para 1). An illegal immigrant is also known as an undocumented or unauthorized entrant (ProCon.org, para 3) or more commonly, aliens. Smugglers known as ‘coyotes’ help the aliens cross the borders because they hold knowledge about the border and the finest routes to take. However, coyotes can be extraordinarily costly as they charge as much as $1000 per person (Illegal Immigration From Mexico, para 3). In 2012, there was an estimated 262 341 Mexicans attempting to illegally cross the Southwestern border of the United States (Almo, 2013, para 1). The border runs from the Californian coast in the west to the Gulf of Mexico in Texas (Almo, 2013, para 2). According to the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), 8.1 million (71%) unauthorized immigrants in the 2008-2012 time period were from Mexico and other Central American countries (Zong and Batalova, 2015, para 102). People from Mexico risk their lives to cross over to the U.S. in search for a better life. (Illegal Immigration From Mexico, para 1). Why There? The developing country of Mexico and the United States share a border. The aliens are expecting a better life in the States because even a low wage job in the States is a higher living standard in Mexico (Illegal Immigration From Mexico, para 1). The lack of basic necessities pushes the aliens towards America (Illegal Immigration From Mexico, para 3). In California, there is a new immigration law of 2015 that states that illegal immigrants can look forward to three years of legal residency and work permits (Kopetman, 2014, para 2). As of January 2nd, there will be a low cost insurance program so aliens can get licenses (Kopetman, 2014, para 4). There will also be a Californian DREAM loan for aliens to obtain student loans (Kopetman, 2014, para 20). In 2016, anyone can apply for professional licences such as doctors, real estate agents, and nurses (Kopetman, 2014, para 23). Arizona has a Senate Bill, SB 1070, that discourages illegal immigration and the presence of aliens (State of Arizona, 2010, para 7). As long as officials hold reasonable suspicion, they are authorized to ask people for documents or anything that identifies them as American citizens (State of Arizona, 201, para 11). In addition, law enforcement officers can also make an arrest without a warrant as long as they believe with reason that the person has committed an offense that could get them removed from the U.S. (State of Arizona, 2010, para 14). Regardless of the alluring aspects of America, illegal immigration affects various parties. Differing Perspectives The …show more content…
The government can ensure that aliens do not receive the benefits that a regular citizen receives, such as public education and employment (Fairus.org, 2013, para 9). Once they realise that they are not getting the better life they expected, the likelihood of the aliens staying are slimmer as well as the chance of them attempting to cross the border. The Mexican and American government can work together to tighten border patrols (Sink, 2015, para 15), thus making it harder for the people to cross. President Obama can step up the aggression at the border (Sink, 2015, para 9), making the borders more frightening, and discouraging the people from trying to cross. The American government is adding 3000 additional border patrols at the Southwestern border and surveillance systems on the ground and in the air. This has reduced illegal immigration by half (Continuing to Strengthen Border Security, 2015, para. 2). Hundred of DHS and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnels would be assigned to the Southwestern border (Continuing to Strengthen Border Security, 2015, para 5). Authorities will deport felons and criminals, but not families (Immigration, 2015, para 7). Security will also run background and criminal checks on aliens as well as make sure that aliens will pay the fair amount of taxes. If the alien has been in the States for five years, the government will hold them accountable (Immigration, 2015, para 8). Illegal immigration cannot be stopped without changes being
