Everybody involved in the Igbo tribe has a right and equal say in decisions that are being made. The Ibos do have different groups of people, such as a council of elders and some women’s associations (“Ibos”). The attire of the tribe is to wear little to no clothing, because clothing is seen to cover private parts. The elders of the tribe are fully clothed, and children usually wear no clothing from the time of birth until adolescence years. Sometimes young children wear beads around their waist for spiritual reasons, and men and women wear body art. Normally, women usually carried their babies on their backs; this is a tradition used by many African tribes (“Arts”). The language of the Igbo tribe is based on a lot of pitch and vocal inflections that define the meaning of the word. One word can have many different meanings because of this. Another thing that is very important in the Igbo language is idioms and proverbs (“Ibos”). An idiom is when a word has both a literal and figurative meaning, and a proverb is a popular saying. The women in Igbo are considered lower then the men. In the story, Nnaemeka, who is the practicing Ibo is in love with and wants to marry a girl out of a different tribe. This is something that is not allowed in the Igbo culture, because the parents of the children arrange their marriages. When Nnaemeka’s father finds out about her job he says, “Teacher, did you say? If you consider that a qualification for a good wife, I should like to point out to you, Emeka, that no Christian woman should teach (Achebe 190). This clearly shows the role of when in the story, and Igbo culture in general. Another thing that is evident in the story is the importance of religion in Igbo. Nnaemeka’s father is an overall very religious man; he will put his beliefs and religion before his family. When Nnaemeka didn’t listen to his opinion about Nene, he told him to leave and never come back. This is another thing that is very common in the Igbo religion. The story also shows how important the Igbo community is, and how everybody has opinions in everything. This is very common and true in the real Igbo culture.
