Icon With The Crucifixion

In the mid 10th century, the masterpiece called Icon with the Crucifixion, though the creator of the art piece is unknown, it is postulated that it came from the Byzantine culture. This Byzantine art piece emphasizes Christ's victory over death. Jesus was publicly scourged, beaten, with a leather-thonged whip before his crucifixion. Tiny pieces of iron and bone chips were tied to the ends of each leather thong, causing deep cuts and painful bruises. He was mocked, struck in the head with a staff and spit on. A prickly crown of thorns was placed on his head and he was stripped naked. A different version of this will be an early piece called the Gero Cross. It dates back to the 965-970, it is the oldest and largest piece of art that has the …show more content…
There’s like burn marks around the whole frame and even inside the frame. The frame also has seven flat screws, three on top and four on the bottom. The bottom part of the frame in the left side is chipped off, or possibly burned off, along with the right side.
Now going inside the frame, the scenery of this Byzantine ivory icon is beneath a ceremonial canopy of stone called baldachin. The head of the baldachin is decorated with circular figures that seems to resemble to cloth. The pattern continues down the columns of the baldachin. Inside the baldachin in the corners, both left and right, there are two figures and it seems like they are suppose to be Jesus’ angles but both figure’s wings had been broken off the art

The Gero Cross was also dated back in 965-970, commissioned by Gero, Archbishop of Cologne. This piece of art is also the oldest large sculpture of the crucified Christ. It's is display in Cologne Cathedral, Germany.
The Gero Cross is about six feet tall, about one foot taller than me. I'm five feet and two inches. It's made out of oak and it’s painted over with brownish colors. Jesus skin is painted with a rich tan color, while his hair and beard is a chestnut. The loincloth, along with the cross seems to be almost like a dark gold.
Jesus Christ himself also looks different. Though he still has the same stance as the previous icon but this time, Jesus head is tilted more straight, like he is looking down upon someone. Hid arms are spread wide and the nails are more visually shows in each hand and foot. Behind the Christ's head is the halo. The halo has a cross inside and is covered with colorful stones, which some of them have fallen off. There's no special design of the cross, the only thing is the black lettered manuscript on top of the cross. Unlike the Icon with the Crucifixion, there's no background besides the cross, nor frame going around it. In this piece of art, there are no angels, no mourning Mary or John, no Roman soldier exchanging pieces of clothes or Hades being nailed through the stomach by the

It was 12 feet tall, painted with tempera, along with gold thin lines throughout the painting that show great importance. The virgin Mary holds the child on a giant throne that is surrounded by angels. Mary, Jesus and the angels have golden painted light behind their heads which resembles their halos. This shows how sacred and holy these individuals are in the painting. Beneath Mary and Jesus in these arch ways are the four Hebrew prophets, they have expressions of concern and wonder.…

The downward-left diagonal line of the mountain in the background draws the eye to Mary holding her dead son, while John the Baptist is throwing his arms up and back in despair. In the painting, Christ is illuminated by being colored in with very pale colors, but he surrounded by a myriad of colors. Each person depicted in the painting, especially those in the foreground, are each wearing clothes that have different hues, such as the Virgin is wearing blue while the Saint John is wearing red. The colors of each of their clothing are quite intense adding to the energy of the scene. There is also a mix of warm and cool tones throughout the painting, which adds the disorder of the painting. Another important aspect of the painting is the use of color in the middle ground and background.…

This magnificent piece, The Procession to Calvary, is a 16th century Flemish tapestry depicting the gospel of Jesus Christ carrying the cross to the hill of Calvary to be crucified. The story leading up to Jesus’s public execution in this biblical scene is portrayed through the art of weaving. Creating a tapestry like this one is done by weaving weft of different materials through a wool warp. Tapestries are generally very large, big enough to cover a wall, and this tapestry is no different than the rest. As one stands back in front of the work, it becomes a bit overwhelming, as the dimensions appear to be approximately ten by twelve feet.…

There was a lot of status, one of Mary, Jesus on a big cross, St Peter and large pictures. The picture that stood out to me the most was of Jesus holding the cross walking while people are looking at him from behind and the last supper picture. Some believe that the cross has been borrowed from rank paganism and has nothing at all to do with true Christianity, saying that the blending of pagan tradition with the worship of God is something that God condemns. It is viewed as idolatry. Others view the cross as a weapon of torture and death used by the Roman Empire. While still others wear it as a beautiful symbol to remember the sacrifice that Christ made for His people. I can recall growing up that my parents did not like the crucifix and it was not something to be “hung on the wall or worn” because it showed Jesus still on the cross, when in fact, He rose from the dead.…
