According to the Italian Renaissance Learning Resources, “Friends were an extension of family networks and connected through long chains of obligation…. Friendships could be quite volatile. Any number of circumstances… could turn a friend into an enemy.” This directly corresponds with Iago and his friendship with Othello. At the beginning of the play, Iago is one of Othello’s closest and warmest friends. Until Othello appoints Cassio instead of Iago with no reasoning. This was the incident that started the domino effect and the beginning of Iago’s hated Othello, despite their history. Othello becomes a pseudo-friend, a person who you call your friend, but in actuality they are not due to some reason, to Iago. Iago’s hatred for Othello becomes more and more prominent as the play unfolds. When Iago realizes that Othello does not even follow the military rules, he sees that Othello cannot be trusted, turning him into an enemy. Later in the play Iago accuses Othello of sleeping with his wife, Emilia. Iago then states that he hates Othello and that he must get even, wife for wife; “I hate the Moor, and it is thought abroad, that 'twixt my sheets 'has done my office. I know not if 't be true, But I, for mere suspicion in that kind, Will do as if for surety” (Act 1, scene 3 lines 329-433). This quote shows just the person that Iago is. Iago always acts as Othello support and abuse him with his honesty words. As his trusty nature, Othello never doubts about Iago's loyalty since he was so helpful and truthful. Not just him but everybody in the play view Iago as an honest man. As such, this gives Iago the opportunity to strike lies, since everything he said was believed to be the truth, Iago said, "Make the Moor thank me, love me, and reward me for making him egregiously an ass and practicing upon his peace and quiet even to madness." (II.1.330-334) This quote shows that Iago uses his honest side as a net for Othello's trust and he will use that trust against Othello himself as revenge on his position and rumors about Othello sleeps with his wife.…

Iago’s misogynistic ways are also illustrated when he speaks to Desdemona’s father and implies that she is property, and in that he accuses Desdemona of being unfaithful to her husband, Othello, without any reason. He speaks ill of her and to her, and ultimately, his misogynistic ways are to blame for her death, because he drives Othello to kill her. Another example of his misogyny is when he says, “You rise to play, and go to bed to work (Oth.2.1115),” implying that women are lazy except for when it comes to sex. There is theory that Iago’s misogynistic ways are due to the fact that he secretly loves Othello, and is jealous of women because of it. His slander of Desdemona, his convincing himself of an affair between his wife and Othello, and his proclamations of love for Othello throughout the play could prove this theory to be…

Even though Iago had been married to Emilia for years, he still shows no connection to his own wife, constantly mocking her and using her for his schemes as well. While Iago simply makes vulgar jokes about women, and calls Emilia a “foolish wife” (3.3.313), Shakespeare uses the affectionate relationship of Desdemona and Othello in contrast to theirs in order to emphasize the fact that Iago never exhibits any affection for her, only criticism. His disconnection is set in stone when in Act V Scene 2, Iago stabs and kills her without a second thought when she gets in his way by revealing his scheme. In contrast, Emilia has always felt a bit of a duty to her husband, saying "I nothing but to please his fantasy," (3.3.310) revealing that she cares for him and thus to her, they were in fact somewhat close, This means there must have been some bonding that was unable to reach Iago, but could in fact affect a sound person. Iago again displays his lack of emotional connection when he cold-bloodedly kills Roderigo.…

When Iago says this in reference to his hatred along with the hatred that Roderigo has for the the Moor meaning Othello, I believe Iago means that no matter what he is devoted and will not let anything get in the way of him hating Othello. Furthermore, Iago saying this I believe he means that as much as Othello is hated by Iago, Roderigo is equally devoted to his cause of hating Othello. Iago wants Roderigo to join in on his plan to seek revenge on Othello. This is evidenced when Iago states “ Let us be conjunctive in our revenge against him.” Iago is fervid in trying to get revenge on Othello, and hopes that Roderigo joins him in his fervid loathing for Othello.…

What is more interesting is classifying Iago as the anti-hero of the story, and not the villain. While he does fit the role of many antagonists, he has a disturbing accumulation of anti-hero qualities that are overlooked. Iago, while his deeds are impure, can be viewed sympathetically. Just because Othello and Iago 's visions do not align, it does not make Iago evil.…
