Prior to beginning the masters of occupational therapy program it was as if I was an ancient wanderer in the dark ages, eager to learn new ideas and discover new places not sure what the world would throw at me next. Over the next eight years I found myself at a series of personal crossroads one encounters during life’s journey. Not the crossroad where one sells their soul to the devil for some magical power. Crossroads that impacted my future, shaped who I am and my character, influenced life changes, which led to a transition that will influence me and my family for generations to come. I come from…

The philosophical principles that lead the Occupational Therapy Education Department strongly influenced my decision to further my education from The University of Kansas School of Medicine. My position as an occupational therapist technician has shown me the importance of these philosophies to guide treatment plans for patients. Each of these philosophies provides the basis an occupational therapist needs to provide quality care. The philosophies that most coincide with my own are "People have the right to direct their own lives" and "Quality of life depends on engagement in occupation".…

There are a variety of qualities I think a master of occupational therapy should possess -- organization to communication skills, and creativity to excellent critical thinking skills. However, if I could narrow those down to the three most significant traits, they would be compassion, patience, and resourcefulness. The dream of becoming an Occupational Therapist can be traced back to my original desire of contributing to exercise-related fields, which derived from those years I committed myself to track and field training before college. During that period of time, I experienced great pleasure, heavy frustration, even grief, and let alone physical discomfort. Fortunately, those diverse experiences have given rise to my own physical and mental growth and have made me realize athletes are not merely people who exercise. For me, having been an athlete is a part of being who I am now, and it shapes my attitude toward how I should live a life in the meantime. This is also why I am studying Exercise Science for my bachelor degree, hoping that I will, one day,…
