1 g of 3-Nitrophtalic Acid, 2 ml of 8% hydrazine solution and a boiling stone was poured into a test tube. The mixture was heated with a Bunsen burner until the solid was melted. Then, 3 ml of Triethylene Glycol was added to the mixture. The solution was boiled until water was removed and the temperature was kept at 210-220 degree celsius for 4 minutes. The temperature was cooled to 100 degree celsius and 15 ml of hot water was added. A yellow crystalline 3-nitrophthalhydrazide were formed after it was cooled under running water. Then the compound was filter without further purification.
A test tube was rinsed and the hydrazide was added into it, then 5 ml of 3M Sodium Hydroxide and 3g of Sodium Dithionite was added into the test tube. The
