Decent Essays
A powerful motive for pursuing social or human services work are personal experiences. I chose to study and work in substance abuse counseling because I wanted the opportunity to do for others what my counselors did for me and my family. During and after my road to recovery I had continued experiences with family and friends who have or still are struggling with sobriety. After attending different types of counseling in different settings for myself and family members it became clear to me that addiction doesn’t discriminate. Addiction doesn’t care where you came from, who you came to be, or what your dreams are. There are all kinds of addicts. We all have pain and we all look for ways to make that pain go away.
