Persuasive Essay On The Repatory System

Over the years of scientific advancements, people have gained access to the sperm banks where sperm gets frozen in liquid nitrogen to be used for later use. One of the most famous banks was The Repository for Germinal Choice created by Robert Klark Graham which was publicized in 1970 (Plotz 1). Although there are many men who can’t have biological children due to many reasons including; low sperm count, poor sperm motility, and abnormal sperm shape (Simon 1), the main question still stands. Should we have a genetic menu listing a picture and IQ levels of the donor? If someone was able to choose who they wanted to spend the rest of their life based solely on looks and IQ, most people probably would. Just because most people would, doesn’t mean that it is realistic. If that happened, most divorce rates would most likely go up because it wouldn’t be personalities that connected it would be the outside. It isn’t how people look that keeps a family together it how the family connects that keeps the family in-sync. So why should it become reality for parents to be able to selectively choose who is their child’s other biological parent is based on how they look and how smart they are with critical thinking? People always point out that there is always a fine line to never cross, wouldn’t this be one of the lines of playing God to not cross? If there is a genetic menu, eventually science will progress quick enough to make it to where you go to the doctor and tell them exactly what your child will look like, how smart they will be and the doctors will make it all happen. If we allow the genetic menu to choose from, what comes next? When will it advance to more than just a menu? Some people may say that it is helpful for the large amount of people who have significant others who are not able to conceive biological children because of infertility. Statistics from September 2015 show that 7.5% of sexually active men went to see a fertility doctor. Of those men, 18% were diagnosed with some sort of fertility treatment (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 1). Think of all the women the men leave unable to have kids no matter if they want to have kids or not. But think of all the people that would donate their sperm if they were able to. The money they could get out of it because every time you donate you get more money. It has been said that less than one percent of men that apply to donate semen are actually accepted. In order those three things are; health, looks, and then brilliance (Ling Video). Although when the repository is needed, these things should be of influence on the choice, but it shouldn’t be as big of a problem as people make it out to be. The main thing that parents want from a child is that they are healthy. Parents always say “I will love you no matter what.” But the couples will spend hours upon hours choosing the ‘perfect’ donor to be their child’s parent even though the child won’t even know who the other parent is. Until the child is either told or figures it out when they are older they will always believe that the two people raising them are their biological parents as long as they were there for them even through the ups and downs. When someone refers to a friend as family it all just means that they are so close they might as well be family. Even when told that one of their parents isn’t really their parent they will still be family because by then there will be a relationship that has been formed before they know the truth about their origin. Even after they know the truth of their parentage, it is still written for the fact that the one who raised them is truly the one who is their parent whether it is biological or
