The purpose of seat belts is to prevent ejection from occurring. “In a car crash, there’s the first collision where the car collides with an object, then there’s a second collision, where the force of the impact is distributed throughout the car. “All seat belts are designed to tighten at the appropriate moment, so that they either prevent the second collision or at least minimize the injury potential of this event” (Seat Belts). When a person is involved in a car accident, they not only have to worry about the initial impact, but also the wave of force that distributes throughout the car after that first hit. If seat belts are in use at that time, they can protect against the forces that could potentially throw them out of the car. These statistics show that in a car crash, a person is more likely to survive if they aren’t ejected from the car. Seat belts can help to prevent that.
Some say that the chance of getting injured by a seat belt in a crash means that never wearing a seat belt is a safer choice, and makes more sense. “When a person is ejected from a vehicle, this event is often fatal (77 percent of occupants who were totally ejected from the vehicle were killed in 2008)” (Seat Belts). A person is, statistically, much more likely to survive an injury from a seatbelt than getting ejected from the car. Therefore, the use of seatbelts can save lives. If there wasn’t substantial evidence that seat belts save lives more than take them, then there wouldn’t be such a push from government, police, and medical professionals to use them. Over the years, many studies have proved the effectiveness of seat belts. Some say that the injuries sustained from a seat belt in a crash make using them not worth it, but even if a person received injuries from a seatbelt in a crash, it would be preferable to getting ejected from the car. Ejection from a car in a crash carries with it a high mortality rate. Overall, seat belts have proven their effectiveness through the years, and wearing them has, and will continue to save
