Joel Hernandez, a two-year old boy, was beaten so severely that he had to be placed in a body cast. Social Workers let him stay with his parents. They never came back to check on him– even after 15 visits to the family home brought no one to the door. However, the social workers did send a certified letter. Joel’s body was later found in a grave, and his stepfather and uncle were charged with murder (Timothy et.al 1). This can be seen throughout different states. More than half a million children are in foster care in the United States today, so it is important to get them to the right place. Child placement agencies are not doing a good job making sure that the kids and parents are a good match. This eventually leads to the home falling apart resulting in placement breakdown. Because of this, the foster child could become emotionally hurt and feel unwanted. Child placement agencies need to do complete full background checks to make sure the parent is suitable for the child (Taft 3). Placing foster kids in group homes is often a go-to. However, they are ten times more expensive per child than a foster home. Foster children have more success when placed in a family home, and putting them in a group home is a troubling practice. Tracey Feild, director of the Child Welfare Strategy Group states, "We believe all kids who have to be removed from their families should be placed with other families. That’s the most important criterion for placement — or it should be." Foster kids grow better with a family because it makes them feel important and valuable to have a parent want
