On November 10,1775, the Continental Congress establishes the Marine Corps, the Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia passed a resolution stating that “ two battalions of Marines be raised” for service as landing forces with the fleet. The date regarded and celebrated as the date of the Marine Corps birthday November 10. Each year on this day around the world Marines toast the birthplace on the most significant date in Marine Corps history. It all started in a bar “Tun Tavern,” and this could of never happened without famous people like Ben Franklin, Robert Mullen, and Samuel Nicholas, first Marine Commandant, and some of the battles that put Marines on the map.
It all began in 1685, when Samuel Carpenter built a huge “brew house” in Philadelphia. The tavern was located on the waterfront at the corner Water Street and Tun Alley. Samuel need a name for his establishment, so he took the name tun which means a cask, barrel, or keg of beer, and the new beer tavern on Tun Alley, elected to call it this fine brewing establishment, Tun Tavern. Being known as a place serving fine beer its reputation grew very quickly attracting organizations such as St. John’s No.1 Lodge of the Grand Lodge of the Masonic Temple were they had some of their first meetings the later years of 1732. Ben Franklin one of the most famous patrons was the third Grand Master of the Masonic Temple. Heritage Press writes, “Roughly ten years later in the early 1740s, the new proprietor expanded Tun Taven and gave the addition a new name, “ Peggy Mullan’s Red Hot Beef Steak Club at Tun Taven.”… ( Heritage Press International, Tun Tavern paragraph 4) Nine years later there was a big Indian uprising plaguing the American colonies. Col. Benjamin Franklin organized the Pennsylvania Militia recruiting soldiers to go into battle with the Indians. Other famous Americans such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson with the Continental Congress met in Tun Tavern to prepare to break away and obtain their independence from the English Crown. Landing in Santo Domingo, Marines fought besides William Eaton and First Lieutenant Presley O’Bannon against the Barbary pirates along the “Shore of Tripoli.” United States Marine Corps History Division illustrates “Marines took part in numerous naval operations during the War of 1812, as well as participating in the defense of Washington at Bladensburg, Maryland, and fought alongside Andrew Jackson in the defeat of the British at New Orleans.” 1846-1848 brought on the next significant battle for the Marines in the Mexican war were they took over several enemy seaports on the Gulf and Pacific coasts. Marines later linked up with General Winfield Scott’s army at Pueblo fighting their way into the “Halls of Montezuma,” Mexico City. The Civil War had most Maries ashore and afloat with the Navy, but a battalion of Marines fought at the battle of Bull Run a notable battle in the history of the Marine Corps. World War I Marines earned the nickname “Tuefel Hunden” meaning devil dog in German, earned by the Marines for their fierce fighting against the Germans in the Battle of Belleau
