Romeo and Juliet: Act 3 Scene 1 in Modern English
Benvolio:I ask you, fine Mercutio, let’s stop this.
It’s hot outside, and the Capulet family are walking around.
If we see them, we’re going to get into a fight.
People are going to get mad a lot easier due to the heat.
Mercutio: You’re like one of those dudes who when he enters a bar,
Slams his sword on the table and says “I hope I never have to
Kill you with this!” And by the time he has his second drink,
He pulls his sword on the bartender for no reason.
Benvolio: Am I really one of those dudes?
Mercutio: Come on, man, when you’re mad,
You can be as mad as any guy in Italy. And when you’re
Not angry, you find something to get

Either go somewhere where private,
Or just go away! Everybody is watching us out here,
Mercutio: Men’s eyes were made to look, so let them look.
I will not move to please anybody.
Romeo enters
Tybalt: Well peace be with you. Here comes my man.
Mercutio: He’s not your man. Go into a field and he will follow.
Your worship does not allow you to call him your “man”
Tybalt: Romeo, the only thing I can call you is a villain.
Romeo: Tybalt, I have a reason to love you that makes Me put aside my anger and greet you. I am no villain. So goodbye.
You obviously do not know me.
Tybalt: Boy, this can’t excuse the hurt you have done. So draw your

I love you more than you know.
And so good Capulet-which is a name I love like my own- be satisfied.
Mercutio: This vile submission is dishonorable!
Tybalt, you ratcatcher, will you fight?
Tybalt: What do you want from me?
Mercutio: Good King of Cats, nothing at all except your nine lives. I’ll take one, then depending on how you treat me, I might beat the other eight out of you. Will you draw you sword?
Hurry up or I’ll cut your ears off before you have it drawn!
Tybalt: I’ll fight you.
Romeo: Gentle Mercutio, put your sword away.
Mercutio: Come, sir, your passado.
Mercutio and Tybalt fight
Romeo: (Drawing his sword) Draw your sword Benvolio,
Let us beat down their weapons. Gentlemen, stop this disgraceful fight.
The Prince has banned fighting in the streets of Verona! Good Mercutio!

Romeo tries to break up the fight. Tybalt goes under Romeo’s arm and stabs Mercutio
Petruchio: Let’s leave, Tybalt.
Tybalt, Petruchio, and some Capulets exit
Mercutio: I am hurt! I hope a plague curses both of your families! I’m done. Did he get away unharmed?
Benvolio: What, are you hurt?
Mercutio: Yes, just a scratch, but it’s enough. Go, boy, get me a doctor.
Page exits
Romeo: Have courage, the wound cannot be that

In the Zeffirelli version, Mercutio had a bad temper and was drunk, but he also seemed kind of playful. He started just playing around with the Capulets when they came into the scene. They mess with him in return, but he doesn’t take it as a joke. His bad temper kicks in and they draw their swords. His joking, playful side comes out again during the fight, and they just mess around, not exchanging any blows, until of course Mercutio is stabbed and dies.…
