Throughout the years of schooling we have all learned how to read and understand a poem. With a deeper understanding of how poems are written and how to read a poem they can become very interesting Poems are a way people can express them self in just a few words. Poetry is an art form in which human language is used to express its artistic, creative, and inventive qualities. Poetry consists largely of oral or literary works in which the language is used in a manner that is felt by its audience and differs from ordinary writings or stories. Poetry can be differentiated most of the time from writing or stories, due to writings and stories frequently using more complete logical or narrative structures than poetry does. Knowing the form of a poem will help the reader better understand and be able to read the poem. Form is a poem that follows a certain pattern like rhyme scheme or meter or has a certain topic or focus, or all of the above. Haiku, limericks, sonnets, and sestinas, are all forms of poetry that use conventional arrangements of meter and rhyme patterns. Free verse is also a form of poetry. Free verse form means that there is no regular metrical form or a uniform overall rhyme scheme. There are two stanzas, one with the speaker as a boy and the other with the speaker as a girl. This free verse style poem allows the author to show the differences in the viewpoints of the two speakers. This verse form does not mean that the author, Pat Mora, was being lazy. Authors choose the verse form that they are going to use for a specific reason. Mora chose to use free verse so that the audience would be able to relate to the poem due to its simplicity. For example, if the poem had an intense rhyme scheme, then the reader could get sidetracked easily causing the reader not to comprehend or understand the message Mora was trying to make. I feel that the free verse form is able to leave a longer lasting impression on the reader about what the true meaning of the poems. When the reader can identify or relate to the main point in a poem it becomes easier to read. The main point of this poem is to remind the reader about illegal immigration into the United States from Mexico. Although both sides have their points and opinions, neither side is willing to give in. The childish tone reminds the reader of the bickering between the United States and Mexico and how immature it seems. Immigration is a very serious controversy that affects both American and Mexicans. It seems to me that neither country is trying to do what is best for the people, but instead, each country is just thinking about
