How Does Roosevelt Show Courage

The medal of honor has been presented 3,515 times to people who have shown great acts of courage. Courage is used by many individuals and in the TEDTalk, "Living with Courage: Embracing Fear to Follow Your Heart," Kelley Kalafatich talks about how she relates to Eleanor Roosevelt’s quote, “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.” Courage is when you are able to take your fears head on and face them. Being courageous means to not be scared anymore and to have the strength to get through the things that do scare you. This quote about courage by Eleanor Roosevelt can be connected to my life, the arts, and the world around me.

Walter Dean Myers is a perfect example of a person who had tons of courage growing up, to get to where he was. Growing up, Walter was really into reading and writing. Every day after school, Walter would go to the library and get a book and bring it home to read. But as Walter walked home, he would sometimes run into some of his older friends who were playing ball. They all thought that reading was for girls and he should be out with them playing ball instead. He would get made fun of every day for reading by them, but he would still do it. After Walter got his book, he would just slip it into a paper bag and walk home so he had a better chance of not being made fun of. He didn’t let the people who made fun of him, keep him from reading, which he loved. Walter had the courage to walk past them every day and not care what they thought. It didn’t matter what they said or did because he knew that soon he would be home and able to read his book in his room, quietly.
