How Does Iago Manipulate His Jealousy

In the play Othello, by William Shakespeare, the emotion of jealousy rules over all of the characters, making them believe their actions are justifiable. The characters actions and driven towards revenge on others for wronging them in some way and this is because of jealousy.

Iago's jealousy has made him unreasonable and nonsensical. Iago believes that Cassio is unfit for lieutenant because he is “a Florentine, A fellow almost damned in a fair wife, That never set a squadron in the field, Nor the division of a battle knows More than a spinster” (I. i. 21-25). Iago feels Cassio is not worthy of lieutenant and doesn't understand the Intricacies of battle and Iago shows his jealousy for Cassio when he believes he should have been chosen. In

Iago tells Roderigo that “when [Desdemona] is sated with his body she will find the {error} of her choice. Therefore, put money in they purse.” (I. iii. 393-395). Roderigo is jealous that Desdemona is with Othello so Iago uses his jealousy to manipulate him by telling him that she soon leave him for someone younger and richer and tells Roderigo to get rich when Iago only wants him to get rich so he can take his money from him. Iago thinks to himself in his Soliloquy “whether [Roderigo] kills Cassio, or Cassio him, or each does kill the other, Every way makes my gain.” (V. i. 13-15). Iago is talking about how it doesn't matter, to Iago, whether Cassio or Roderigo die's because he has taken everything from Roderigo and used him as a pawn since the start and he was ordered to kill Cassio. Because of Roderigo's love for Desdemona that if he kills Cassio, then Desdemona will stay in Cyprus and he can win her over even though Roderigo says “I have no great devotion to the deed” (V. i. 9).
