Henry ran from the very first battle he fought in out of cowardice, and while he was running, he tried to justify himself (Crane 51). This shows Henry ran, and knew he was being a coward, but tried to justify it in order to think he has courage. This also shows he only thinks of himself, because instead of running, Henry could have stayed and fought the battle, which would've shown he had courage. In the second battle, Henry stays and fights with his regiment in order to prove he has courage, and this time he fights automatically, while he feels like a machine (Crane 103). This example shows that Henry is slowly gaining courage, and he is willing to stay and fight in battle, while facing war. Although Henry stays to fight, the novel still tells it like Henry is only staying to try and prove himself to others, while he does not really care for the outcome of his fellow soldiers. “He made a spring and a clutch at the pole. In the story on page 72 Henry said " "He now thought that he wished he was dead. He believed that he envied those men whose bodies lay strewn over the grass of the fields and on the fallen leaves of the forest" this shows that Henry is a coward because he doesn't want to live anymore because before he just ran from the battle instead of fighting and now that he had ran into all these wounded and dead soldiers he feels like it is his fault and he doesn't want to be seen again. It's all a point of war Henry should have stayed and helped fight instead of running away from the battle he could have at least tried to help fight and maybe not as much people would have been hurt or…
