When the dwarves are taken and held in a prison by the Elves and the King. Bilbo is safe with his powerful ring and out of harm’s way. He has the ability to slip on his ring and walk away safely. Nonetheless, Bilbo bravely comes up with an escape plan to save all of the dwarves from their cells. The ring gives him the confidence boost he needs and very much aids him in his rescue mission. He is able to use the ring to quietly steal the keys from a drunk guard, and speedily free the dwarves. Without the ring, Bilbo would’ve had to be in plain sight or hide somewhere, where if spotted he would be killed. The ring allowed the plan to go somewhat smoothly and with it he felt a new power and confidence to be the hero. Bilbo says, “You just follow me! We must all keep together and not risk getting seperated.”(178) The hobbit’s demeanor of wanting to run away and be safe in the comforts of his boring little home are washed away and a new sense of want for adventure takes place. The ring allows him to feel this rush of power and adrenaline that aids him in the rescue of his friends. In this scene, the dwarves lives are at stake, and Bilbo comes up with a quick plan that will get them all to safety, even though he had the opportunity to leave. It’s normal to hide behind a screen, it’s normal to be a coward. Our society thinks different nowadays, more selfish and cowardly. We would rather let an opportunity go by then try to put ourselves out and risk anything. Yes, in a life threatening situation we would all try to save ourselves. The real question is, when others are at risk would we jump in a save them? 9/10 of us wouldn’t. The difference between being truly brave and saving ourselves, is how we choose to act when others are at risk. By adding different scenarios of who and what was in danger, Bilbo’s ring gave him the confidence and a sort of courage he needed.
